Cape of Good Hope King Edward VII One Penny

Treasure detail

Cape of Good Hope King Edward VII One Penny

Under Review

Description: This antique definitive stamp displays the left-facing profile portrait of King Edward VII nestled within an ornate, curved frame of classical scrollwork. An elaborate imperial crown sits directly above the monarch's head, balanced by two small circular tablets containing the "1d" denomination in the upper left and right corners. The left border carries the vertical inscription "CAPE OF", while the right side reads "GOOD HOPE", leading down to a wide bottom banner labeled "ONE PENNY POSTAGE". A heavy, bold black circular postmark cleanly cancels the center of the carmine-red design, reading "PORT ELIZABETH..." along the upper arc and displaying a crisp internal date configuration of "MR 23 08".

Circa: 1902-1909; cancelled 1908.

Condition: Used on fragment

Notes:

The British colonial administration of the Cape of Good Hope authorized this specific King Edward VII series to phase out the older, long-running Hope allegory designs of the Victorian era. The exceptionally clear circular date stamp cancellation tracks the exact processing date to March 23, 1908, inside the historic coastal city of Port Elizabeth.
