Cape Mounted Rifles Horn Button

Under Review

Material: Pressed Horn

Size: 25mm

Description: Victorian-era rifle tunic button carved from premium compressed black animal horn. The heavily detailed face features a finely lined background field hosting a standard military strung bugle horn wrapped with the unit letters "CMR" nestled snugly at its center. Positioned directly above the cords is the distinctive, multi-arched Queen Victoria Crown (QVC). Grounding the lower half of the design is a beautifully rendered galloping black wildebeest, which bounds over a flowing, three-part motto scroll cleanly embossed with the Latin phrase "AUCTO SPLENDORE RESURGO" translating to "I rise again with increased splendor."

Circa: 1878 -1901

Notes:

The Cape Mounted Rifles were one of the oldest colonial regiments in southern Africa, tracing to 1793.
This particular pattern (with the Victorian Crown and Latin motto) was worn roughly 1878–1901, through the Frontier Wars and Second Boer War. They were later absorbed into the Cape Colonial Forces, eventually becoming part of the South African Mounted Rifles in 1913.
