Pillars of Constitutional Law

Under Review

Description: This artifact is an unissued mint block of four 25-cent postage stamps issued by the United States Postal Service to commemorate the bicentennial of the establishment of the Supreme Court of the United States. Designed by the highly acclaimed graphic artist Howard E. Paine, each stamp features a striking, gold-toned line engraving of Chief Justice John Marshall, who served as the nation's fourth chief justice and holds the record for the longest tenure in Supreme Court history. Set against a dramatic, solid black background, the design is framed by alternating red headers reading "BICENTENNIAL U.S. SUPREME COURT" and footers reading "Chief Justice John Marshall." Released as part of the broader constitutional bicentennial celebrations of the late twentieth century, this issue visually honors Marshall's monumental legal legacy, most notably his authorship of the landmark 1803 Marbury v. Madison decision which permanently established the doctrine of judicial review.
