Material: Cloth
Description: This vintage military uniform component is a standard sleeve patch representing the rank of Specialist 4th Class (E-4) in the United States Army. The patch features an inverted teardrop or shield-shaped background made of durable olive drab green (OG-107) twill fabric, bordered by a dense, machine-embroidered merrowed edge in matching dark green thread. Dynamically embroidered at the center in bright golden-yellow thread is the stylized American Eagle, clutching an olive branch of peace in its right talon and a bundle of arrows of might in its left talon. The reverse side features the characteristic white bobbin threads and starched reinforcement backing typical of mid-to-late twentieth-century automated manufacture.
Circa: 1955-1968
Notes:
This insignia represents the Specialist Fourth Class rank introduced as part of the U.S. Army Specialist system, which recognized technical competence without conferring non-commissioned officer status. It is among the most familiar Cold War-era American cloth rank insignia and is especially associated with the long service life of the Spec/4 grade.
