National Nature Week Commemorative

Under Review

Description: This stamp, titled "Woodland Life," features a rich montage of native British forest species set against a warm reddish-brown background. The design is anchored by a large badger in the lower left and a curled-up fawn (Roe Deer) in the lower right. The scene is populated by a variety of fauna, including a Great Spotted Woodpecker clinging to a tree trunk, a chaffinch perched on a branch, and a yellow Brimstone butterfly in flight. The Dorothy Wilding portrait of Queen Elizabeth II floats in the upper right, while the text NATIONAL NATURE WEEK runs vertically and horizontally along the left and bottom edges. The denomination 4½d is prominently displayed in the top left corner.

Circa: 1963

Condition: Unused, hinged

Notes:

The Royal Mail commissioned this 4½d denomination to coincide with the UK's first-ever National Nature Week, an educational initiative sponsored by the Council for Nature to foster ecological awareness. The design was custom-drawn by legendary British illustrator and stamp designer Stanley David "Michael" Goaman, who subtly integrated an incredible amount of flora—including wild rose petals, oak leaves, and stalks of wheat—into the dense wildlife layout.
