The Captain Cook and Māori Millennium Commemorative

Under Review

Description: This striking British commemorative stamp displays a dual portrait composition commemorating the historic voyages of Captain James Cook to the Pacific. The right side features a realistic portrait of a powdered and wigged Captain Cook looking outward, contrasted against a left-side profile portrait of a Māori individual showcasing highly intricate, traditional Tā moko facial markings. Rendered in a distinct, textured artistic style by illustrator Andrzej Klimowski, the two figures are set against a minimalist background showing a clear blue sky over an expansive turquoise sea line. The bold white "63" value token anchors the lower right corner, while a subtle, translucent Queen Elizabeth II head profile balances the upper left margin.

Circa: 1999

Condition: Mint.

Notes:

Part of the 1999 Travellers' Tale issue, this stamp reflects the Millennium series habit of turning historical journeys into compact visual narratives. Its interest lies not only in Cook as a British explorer, but in the way the design frames encounter, distance, and cultural meeting across the Pacific.
