Description: This vintage British definitive postage stamp features the left-facing profile of King George V, universally known to philatelists as the "Downey Head" design. Executed in a rich green ink, the central portrait vignette is enclosed within an oval frame wrapped in laurel leaves, surmounted by the Imperial Tudor Crown. The top corners prominently display the fractional denomination "1/2d" flanked by the text arches "POSTAGE" and "REVENUE". Along the bottom, a clean horizontal banner houses the spelled-out value "HALF PENNY". The stamp features standard line perforations and a black wavy-line postal cancellation mark across the left side, indicating authentic historical mail service use.
Circa: 1911-1912
Condition: Used
Notes:
The Downey Head series, based on a coronation photograph taken by W. & D. Downey, is one of the most short-lived and famous definitive issues in Great Britain's postal history. Public dissatisfaction with the photographic realism and shading of the design led the Royal Mail to quickly replace it with the iconic "Profile Head" stamps designed by Bertram Mackennal.
