H. G. Wells (Herbert George Wells, 1866–1946) was an English novelist and social commentator whose imaginative fiction helped shape modern science fiction. In The Time Machine (1895), an inventor travels into the distant future and encounters the Eloi and Morlocks, two divergent descendants of humanity. Through this imagined world, Wells explored class divisions and questioned the assumption that human society would inevitably progress.
