UK – Sir Henry Segrave's Sunbeam

Under Review

Description: This 26p commemorative stamp celebrates Sir Henry Segrave’s record-breaking 1926 land speed achievement of 152 mph (245 km/h) at Southport Beach, England, driving his Sunbeam Tiger, one of the pioneering machines in the quest for speed. The sepia-toned photograph captures Segrave’s car thundering down the beach, its bold red form contrasting against the pale sands and sky. The design evokes both the romance and danger of early motor racing, an era when records were broken through sheer courage and mechanical ingenuity.

Notes:

This stamp forms part of the 1998 “Speed” set, which honored Britain’s century-long contributions to speed records on land, sea, and in the air.

Sir Henry O'Neal de Hane Segrave (22 September 1896 – 13 June 1930) was an early British pioneer in land speed and water speed records. Segrave, who set three land and one water record, was the first person to hold both titles simultaneously and the first person to travel at over 200 miles per hour (320 km/h) in a land vehicle. He died in an accident in 1930 shortly after setting a new world water speed record on Windermere in the Lake District, England. The Segrave Trophy was established to commemorate his life.
