Gairsay Coronation Street Local Carriage Ticket

Under Review

Description: This mint, uncancelled vertical postal issue carries a face value of 35p and was printed for Gairsay, a tiny, privately owned island located in the Orkney archipelago of Scotland. The stamp was created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Britain's longest-running television soap opera, Coronation Street, spanning from 1960 to 1995. It features a colorful caricature of actress Julie Goodyear in her legendary role as the Rovers Return Inn's iconic, leopard-print-loving landlady, Bet Gilroy (née Lynch). The artwork depicts her with an exaggerated blonde beehive hairstyle, large statement earrings, and a bright red blazer while balancing a cocktail coupe. A miniature Scottish saltire flag occupies the top left corner, while a vertical tan label houses the island name "GAIRSAY" and the text "A LANDMARK IN TELEVISION HISTORY".

Circa: 1995

Condition: MNH

Notes:

This item is classified as a "Cinderella stamp" or a local carriage ticket, meaning it was not produced by the Royal Mail and holds no official validity for standard international postage. Instead, these private island labels were created to cover the small costs of ferrying mailbags from remote, unpopulated islands like Gairsay to the nearest official mainland post office. Gairsay's owner famously produced several pop-culture-themed commemorative sheets during the 1980s and 1990s, highlighting topics from British television to classic cinema to attract tourist interest.
