Treasure detail

1966 England World Cup Winners Stamp Block

Under Review

Description: This artifact is a beautifully preserved twelve-stamp block of the legendary 4d (fourpenny) "England Winners" commemorative issue. Designed by the renowned graphic artist David Gentleman, the illustration captures two players dynamically competing for a football using a clean, bold mid-century modern aesthetic. The top-left corner displays the pre-decimal face value of 4d alongside the specially added text "ENGLAND WINNERS," which distinguished this celebratory release from the standard tournament stamps. The elegant silhouette of Queen Elizabeth II anchors the top right, while "World Cup 1966" and the printer's credit "HARRISON AND SONS LTD" run neatly along the bottom edge.

Circa: 1966

Condition: MNH Block

Notes:

Following the dramatic 4-2 final victory against West Germany on July 30, 1966, the Postmaster General Edward Short ordered a rapid reprint of the standard 4d issue to include the "ENGLAND WINNERS" caption. This caused a frenzy among the public, leading to massive queues at post offices and creating one of the earliest speculative bubbles in modern British philately.
