The Station Block

Under Review

Description: Issued by the Royal Mail as part of the "British Pub Signs" commemorative series, this block of four features the 1st Class denomination titled "The Station." Designed by renowned wood engraver and illustrator Andrew Davidson, the artwork was crafted to emulate a classic, hanging tavern sign. The stark graphic composition utilizes shades of deep navy, slate, and ice blue to depict a retro-stylized steam locomotive advancing over a complex network of converging railway tracks. The gantry of an overhead signal box arches above the train, while the standard silhouette profile of Queen Elizabeth II anchors the top left corner, with the denomination "1ST" sitting clearly in the top right.

Condition: Mint block of four with margin.

Notes:

2003 Royal Mail "Pub Signs" 1st Class stamp does not depict a single, specific real-world railway station pub. Instead, it is a stylized, archetypal artwork created by the British illustrator Andrew Davidson.

Royal associations, heraldic symbols, heroes of the day, religious, military, sports and patriotic themes have all given rise to pub names since 1393, when King Richard II passed an act making it compulsory for alehouses to exhibit a sign.
