Material: Gilding metal (brass)
Size: 40 mm w × 32 mm h
Description: This brass metal insignia is a shoulder title designed for the epaulettes of the Service Dress tunic. The central device is a flaming grenade, the traditional emblem of a fusilier regiment. Superimposed on the ball of the grenade is a circular strap inscribed with the regimental motto "QUO FATA VOCANT" (Whither the Fates Call), enclosing a depiction of St. George slaying the Dragon. The grenade is flanked by the large uppercase letters "N" and "F," which are integrally connected to the central device. The reverse originally featured two loop lugs (one of which is missing) for securing the badge to the uniform shoulder strap using a split pin.
Circa: Early 20th Century
Notes:
The regiment was historically the 5th Regiment of Foot, earning them the nickname "The Fighting Fifth." St. George and the Dragon is an ancient badge of the regiment, allegedly connected to their service in Holland in 1674.
