Material: Cloth embroidery on dark backing.
Size: 85mm w x 35mm h.
Description: This artifact is an authentic, original Royal Air Force (RAF) Observer’s flying badge, colloquially termed an aircrew brevet by military collectors. The design is characterized by a single, sweptback white embroidered wing with stylized feather segments extending from a central capital letter "O". The entire motif is machine-stitched using off-white or cream-colored silk threading directly onto a thick, dark black wool or felt backing cloth template.
Circa: 1939-1950
Notes:
This brevet identified a qualified Royal Air Force Observer, an early aircrew role that could include navigation, reconnaissance, and bombing duties before later wartime specialization separated these functions into more distinct trades. The badge was worn above the left breast pocket as part of the RAF aircrew brevet system.
