Order of St John – Service Medal (Ladies Bow)

Under Review

Material: Silver and black/white enamel
Size: 40mm
Description: The artifact is a Serving Sister (now structured simply as Member) breast medal from the Venerable Order of Saint John, an elite British royal order of chivalry celebrated globally for managing the St. John Ambulance brigade. The circular base metal medal features a recessed black enamel background framing a striking, flush-set white enamel eight-pointed Maltese Cross. Nestled dynamically within the principal interlocking quadrants of the cross are stylized Heraldic Lions and Unicorns, representing the direct royal patronage of the British monarch. The top loop is fitted with a wide, horizontally stitched black silk grosgrain bow ribbon, which is the specific institutional configuration traditionally prescribed for formal female uniform chest mounting.

Circa: Mid-20th century

Notes:
This badge represents the insignia of a Member (Serving Sister) of the Order of St John, a charitable order devoted to medical aid and humanitarian service. The order received its modern royal charter from Queen Victoria in 1888 and is closely associated with St John Ambulance. Female members traditionally wore the badge suspended from a black bow, while male members wore the same insignia on a straight ribbon. The Maltese cross symbol traces its heritage to the medieval Knights Hospitaller, reflecting the order’s origins in providing care to the sick and injured.
