UK 1911 Penny

Under Review

Material: Bronze (approx. 95.5% copper, 3% tin, 1.5% zinc)

Diameter: 30.8 mm

Mint: Royal Mint, London (no mintmark)

Obverse: Bare head of King George V facing left. Legend: GEORGIVS V DEI: GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX: FID: DEF: IND: IMP: Translation: George V, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India. Portrait by Bertram Mackennal, whose design was used across George V’s coinage beginning in 1911.

Reverse: Seated Britannia facing right holding a trident and shield bearing the union flag. Legend: ONE PENNY with the date 1911 below. The Britannia reverse design originates from earlier copper coinage dating back to the reign of Charles II in the 17th century and remained a symbol of British coinage for centuries.

Condition: Fine–Very Fine. Moderate circulation wear with clear portrait and Britannia detail. Even medium-brown tone typical of circulated bronze.

Notes:

The 1911 penny marked the beginning of George V’s bronze coinage series, replacing the pennies of Edward VII following his death in 1910.

Ghosting:  A common feature on George V bronze coinage where elements of the large obverse portrait appear faintly through the reverse, especially around Britannia. This is usually the result of strike pressure and metal flow in thin bronze planchets, and is not normally classified as an error.
