Material: Bronze (Approx. 95.5% Copper, 3% Tin, 1.5% Zinc)
Diameter: 30.8 mm
Mint / Mintmark: Royal Mint, London (no mintmark)
Obverse: This large bronze coin represents the obverse of the classic pre-decimal United Kingdom one penny piece, minted under the authority of King George VI. Designed by the celebrated artist Thomas Humphrey Paget, the design shows the King’s uncrowned portrait—his initials "HP" are subtly struck near the base of the neck truncation. The prominent circumferential inscription reads "GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP.", which abbreviates a Latin phrase proclaiming him King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, and Emperor of India. Struck in massive numbers by the Royal Mint in London, the coin's robust composition consists of a durable alloy blending copper, tin, and zinc.
Reverse: Seated Britannia facing right with trident and shield, denomination ONE PENNY and date 1938 below.
