Royal Artillery Button

Under Review

Material: Gilt brass

Diameter: 25 mm

Description: This large military uniform button features a highly detailed, die-struck brass front face representing the Royal Regiment of Artillery. The central motif prominently displays an early nineteenth-century muzzle-loading field cannon complete with a detailed multi-spoke wheel, an uncoiled drag rope, and a textured grassy ground patch below the carriage. Surmounting the weaponry is the distinct Tudor Crown, commonly known as the King's Crown (KC), which signifies its manufacture and service during the reign of King George V. The entire convex front shell has been finished with a rich gilding layer that exhibits an exceptional warm golden-brown patina from handling and minor oxidation. The reverse retains an intact structural wire loop shank and is crisply stamped with the prestigious maker's mark reading "JENNENS & CO LTD LONDON".

Circa: 1912-1924
Notes:

This specific button is an absolute textbook piece for military collectors because the "Jennens & Co Ltd" backmark provides a razor-thin window of authentication. The firm operated for over a century as a premier button maker before incorporating as a limited company around 1912; it was subsequently bought out and absorbed by J.R. Gaunt & Son in 1924. This means this exact button was produced either immediately prior to or during the First World War, serving an officer on a high-grade dress tunic rather than standard battlefield service dress.
