Material: Gilt brass
Size: 25 mm
Description: This original large military uniform button showcases the intertwined monogram cypher letter "A" representing Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Cresting directly above her personal cypher is her royal coronet, while a split flowing decorative scroll wraps around the sides and base stamped with the designation "THE PRINCESS OF WALES'S OWN". Die-struck out of heavy solid brass, the front face has aged beautifully into a rich golden-bronze patina, complemented by a secure back attachment loop and the sharp manufacturer backmark of Firmin & Sons, London.
Circa: 1881–1920
Notes:
Worn by the Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment), better known as the Green Howards, after the Childers Reforms.
The regiment adopted this distinctive cypher badge following Princess Alexandra’s marriage to the future King Edward VII, integrating her Danish roots into their official insignia and renaming the 19th Regiment of Foot in her honor.
