Highland Light Infantry Assaye Tunic Button

Under Review

Material: Gilt brass
Size: 25 mm

Description: This 25mm large-size military tunic button represents the Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment). The highly convex brass face features the intricate insignia of the regiment, centered around the dimpled saltire (St. Andrew's Cross). Layered on top of the cross is a traditional French horn flanking the regiment's "HLI" monogram, which is beautifully surmounted by the imperial King's Crown (Tudor Crown). Suspended directly beneath the horn loop is a decorative battle honour scroll crisply embossed with "ASSAYE", which arches directly above a finely detailed imperial elephant. The reverse of this heavy two-piece button features a sturdy, fixed attachment wire loop shank and a crisp maker's backstamp reading "J R GAUNT & SON LTD LONDON ENGD".

Circa: 1901-1952

Notes:

The presence of the elephant and the word Assaye on this button honors the regiment's legendary bravery at the Battle of Assaye in 1803, where they fought under the command of Major General Arthur Wellesley, who later became the Duke of Wellington. The backmark reading J.R. Gaunt London guarantees that this piece was manufactured by one of England's most prolific and respected military outfitters of the 20th century.
