Material: Nickel-plated brass
Size: 25mm
Description: The item is a large white metal or nickel-plated tunic button featuring the distinct, stylized acronym "CAG" embossed across the center. It was manufactured for the uniforms of the British Civil Air Guard, an organization created to bolster the nation's air defense capabilities as international tensions mounted in Europe. The reverse side features the authentic, historic maker's mark of the renowned military insignia manufacturer, J.R. Gaunt & Son Ltd, London.
Circa: 1938–1939
Notes:
Pre-War Pilot Pipeline: Formed in the summer of 1938, the Civil Air Guard offered heavily subsidized flight training to standard citizens aged 18 to 50. This created a critical, massive pool of amateur pilots who were instantly absorbed into the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) when World War II erupted in late 1939.
