The Transvaal Scottish 8th Infantry Glengarry Cap Badge

Under Review

Material: Gilding metal (single-piece die-stamped brass)
Size: 65 mm W × 65 mm H
Description: This original military cap badge features a finely struck, voided design showcasing a Scottish thistle at its center, flanked by detailed leaves. The central motif rests above a flowing banner inscribed with the Scottish Gaelic regimental motto, "Alba nam Buadh," which translates to "Scotland, home of the virtues" or "Well done, Scotland". This central layout is surrounded by a circular heraldic strap and buckle carrying the raised text "8th INF. SCOTTISH TRANSVAAL," all super-imposed over the multi-pointed, textured Star of the Order of the Thistle. Struck in durable gilding brass, this large-format insignia was designed to be prominently worn on the traditional dark blue glengarry caps of the regiment's uniform ensemble.
Reverse: Lug fittings missing.
Circa: 20th Century
Notes:

The regiment was formed in South Africa after the Second Anglo-Boer War from volunteers with strong Scottish connections. The thistle, motto, and tartan associations all reflect that identity.

While the historic unit traces its roots back to 1902, this specific designated "8th Infantry" variant of the insignia was introduced in 1921 following structural military reorganizations and remained actively produced through the mid-to-late 20th century.
