Material: Embroidered wool thread on khaki cloth with green border
Dimensions: 35 mm (Slightly Elongated)
Description: This original circular fabric insignia is an authentic UK Boy Scout proficiency award. The design showcases a bright red embroidered hammer crossed over a matching paintbrush, centered on a neutral khaki-tan woven twill backing. Encircling the central tools is a prominent green embroidered ring containing the raised uppercase text "BOY SCOUTS" split evenly across the top and bottom arches. The outer edge is finished with a dense, bound embroidered border. Designed to be sewn onto a scout’s uniform sleeve or merit badge sash, this badge served as visible proof that a scout had mastered basic household repair and maintenance tasks. The reverse side of this badge features a distinct, coarse-weave white canvas fabric covering a soft interior padding layer, commonly referred to by insignia historians as a "puffy back."
Circa: Mid 20th Century
Notes:
The Handyman/Jobman badge recognized practical manual skill within the Scout proficiency system. Its tool motif reflects craft, repair work, and useful domestic or workshop competence, all central to the movement’s emphasis on self-reliance and service.
