Material: White metal
Dimensions: 55 mm
Description: This piece is a classic example of an original British Army insignia issued specifically to the 4th and 5th Territorial Battalions of the Seaforth Highlanders regiment. Struck from crisp white metal, the design features a prominent, textured circular strap adorned with three decorative multi-petal flowers along the bottom rim. Positioned proudly in the voided center is a highly detailed Scottish wildcat saliant standing upon a traditional heraldic wreath, or torse. Arching across the top portion of the band is the legendary Gaelic-derived clan motto "SANS PEUR," translated directly as "Without Fear". The reverse side is structurally complete with dual, unmarked copper alloy fixing lugs intended to slide securely into a wool Glengarry or Tam o' Shanter bonnet.
Circa: 1920-1946
Notes:
While standard Seaforth Highlanders battalions traditionally wore a stag's head insignia bearing the motto "Cuidich 'n Righ," the 4th (Ross-shire) and 5th (Sutherland) battalions were granted permission to preserve their ancestral regional identities. The wildcat emblem and "Sans Peur" motto are drawn directly from the ancient armorial bearings of the Clan Sutherland, paying homage to the northern recruitment grounds of these specific units.
