Royal Navy Anti-Aircraft Gunner 2nd Class Badge

Under Review

Material: Cloth

Size: 72mm w x 85mm h

Description: This vintage military textile artifact is an authentic British Royal Navy (or Commonwealth partner, such as the Royal Canadian Navy) Anti-Aircraft Gunner 2nd Class trade qualification badge. Meticulously machine-embroidered with bright red thread onto a heavy, dark navy blue wool cloth background, the uniform insignia measures approximately 72mm in width by 85mm in height with a subtly rounded top edge. The central motif displays two stylized, crossed anti-aircraft gun barrels, which are surmounted at the peak by a prominent, six-pointed heraldic star. Positioned directly underneath the crossed artillery pieces is a bold, capital letter "A", indicating the specific anti-aircraft specialization branch. The back of the patch is unlined, displaying the original white and red tension bobbin threads characteristic of mid-century military manufacturing techniques.

Circa: 1939-1948

Notes:

The geometric hierarchy of Royal Navy trade patches during the Second World War followed a strict, standardized visual code to communicate a sailor's technical qualification level at a glance. A basic trade insignia featured only the core weapon or tool symbol, whereas a 2nd Class rating added a single star above the design, and a highly advanced 1st Class rating featured a star above accompanied by a second star or crown below. The letter "A" explicitly distinguished these specialized anti-aircraft crews from standard "Gunlayer" ratings (who wore a letter "G") or "Quarter Gunners" (who wore a letter "Q"). These sailors were tasked with operating the rapid-fire defensive weaponry aboard warships to repel enemy dive-bombers and torpedo planes.
