Material: Embroidered cotton and rayon thread on dark blue woven backing
Dimensions: 35mm x 35mm
Description: This item is a vintage, square-shaped woven cloth badge measuring 35mm by 35mm, featuring a dark navy blue background. The top text displays the words "GREATER LONDON" embroidered in block yellow capital letters, while the bottom reads "NORTH EAST" in a matching yellow font. Centered between the text fields is a circular emblem bordered by a thick red stitched ring. The interior of the circle holds six wavy horizontal bars alternating in white and light blue to depict water waves, overlaid by a central solid red circle containing a stylized golden Saxon crown. The reverse side shows standard threads from the manufacturing process, intended to be permanently sewn onto a uniform jacket or shirt.
Circa: 1965–1980s
Notes:
The central emblem directly adopts the historic coat of arms of the Greater London Council (GLC), which was originally designed by Anthony Wagner, the Garter Principal King of Arms. The six blue and white waves represent the River Thames, while the gold Saxon crown over the red background signifies London's deep Saxon heritage.
