Vintage Certified Boatman Vitreous Enamel Badge

Under Review

Material: Gilt brass with white and red enamel
Size: 30 mm × 30 mm
Description: This premium, circular maritime uniform insignia measures 30mm by 30mm and functions as an official qualification token for a certified commercial boat operator. The badge is expertly struck in solid gilt brass and features a wide outer ring finished in hard-fired white vitreous (glass) enamel, crisply displaying the capitalized inscription "CERTIFIED BOATMAN". A highly stylized, three-dimensional golden nautical rope motif creates a quad-divided frame around the ring. At the very center of the badge sits a beautifully textured, curved swallowtail signal flag finished in rich, translucent red enamel. The reverse side features a traditional, early-to-mid 20th-century safety pin style clasp mechanism and is individually stamped with the low issuance or registration number 124.
Circa: 1930s–1950s
Notes:

Before standardized modern licensing cards took over, harbor boards, commercial ferry lines, and coastal navigation authorities issued high-quality enamel badges to personnel who successfully cleared advanced boat-handling, lifesaving, and regional piloting examinations.
