Material: Gilt brass
Size: 40mm W × 50mm H
Description: This First World War period dress badge belongs to the highly specialized Armoured Car Section of the Royal Naval Air Service (R.N.A.S.). Formed from die-struck gilding brass, the prominent oval plaque is surmounted by a beautifully detailed Tudor Crown (King's Crown) and features a delicate laurel branch border framing the lower rim. The central stippled field features the raised bold acronym "R.N.A.S." situated directly over a meticulously rendered silhouette of a Lanchester or early Rolls-Royce armored car, complete with its distinct side-mounted rivet panels and a rotating machine gun turret. This exceptionally well-preserved example is unmarked on the reverse and retains its original dual fastening loops alongside a period cotter pin thread.
Circa: 1914–1915
Notes:
The Royal Naval Air Service pioneered early mechanized land warfare during WWI by deploying armor-plated cars to rescue downed naval pilots stranded across the fields of Belgium. Because the unit operated under naval jurisdiction for an incredibly brief operational window before the War Office re-allocated all land assets to the army in 1915, genuine surviving insignia are extraordinarily rare and highly sought after by militaria specialists worldwide.
