Material: Gilt and silvered metal with enamel inlay (red and blue)
Size: 45 mm × 45 mm
Description: This authentic British emergency services uniform insignia was worn by personnel serving the metropolitan area of Merseyside. The central shield features a deep blue enamel field divided diagonally by stylized wavy gold lines representing the River Mersey, flanked by two cormorants, commonly known as liver birds, to symbolize the region's connection to Liverpool. A vibrant red enamel ring encircles this shield, boldly inscribed with the department's title, Merseyside Fire Brigade, in polished brass lettering. This central circular medallion is secured directly inside a detailed golden laurel wreath. The entire multi-piece assembly is riveted onto a heavy, faceted eight-pointed starburst backing that is cast in a brilliant white metal. The reverse of the piece features an unmarked surface equipped with two solid fastening lugs.
Circa: 1974 – 1989 (used after creation of Merseyside Fire Brigade under the 1974 local government reorganization; later succeeded by Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service).
