Material: White metal (thin die-struck)
Size: 50 mm w × 50 mm h
Description: This distinct infantry headdress badge is struck in white metal and showcases the rampant lion of Scotland superimposed over the diagonal saltire of St. Andrew. This central design is encased within a circular belt containing the stylized motto "STRIKE SURE". Located inside the lower rim of the belt is a tiny, meticulously stamped banner highlighting the South African battle honor. Intricate scrolls unfurl across the top and bottom of the insignia to map out the unit title, while a beautifully arranged wreath composed entirely of traditional Scottish thistles borders the outer edge.
Reverse: The reverse of this die-stamped insignia clearly exposes the hollow, mirrored impression of the front-facing Scottish thistle wreath and rampant lion design. Spanning horizontally across the center is a sturdy, long brass pin that pivots inside a thick rolled hinge securely soldered to the right side of the badge. The left side features a simple open-cradle catch loop designed to catch and hold the tension of the pin when fastened. The absence of any manufacturer stamps or hallmark engravings indicates that this item was likely produced by a standard commercial military outfitter before undergoing custom hardware adaptation.
Circa: 1908-1938
Notes:
This piece is the specific pattern worn by the 14th (County of London) Battalion, London Scottish, heavily utilized by territorial soldiers throughout the First and Second World Wars. The "S. AFRICA 1900-02" engraving commemorates the volunteers from the regiment who reinforced Gordon Highlanders units during the Boer War.
