Material: White metal
Size: 45 mm w × 50 mm h
Description: This British military headdress insignia is cast from bright white metal and measures 50mm in height by 45mm in width. The outer profile forms an eight-pointed rayed star inspired by the prestigious Order of the Garter, which forms the background for a ball-tipped Maltese cross flanked by a lush laurel wreath. The center features a prominent circular band inscribed with the iconic victory battle honor "Arroyo Dos Molinos 1811" surrounding a finely detailed Chinese Dragon beneath a small crescent labeled "China." Over a dozen distinct historical battle honors—including Albuhera, Sevastopol, and the Relief of Ladysmith—are explicitly stamped into the four textured arms of the cross. A magnificent King's Crown (Tudor style) surmounts the top pinnacle, while a beautifully sweeping scroll across the bottom grounds the design with the unit's title. The flat back features an unmarked, unissued solid metal slider designed to secure the device directly to a standard wool service cap or beret.
Circa: 1901 - 1952
Notes:
Formed in 1881 from the 34th (Cumberland) and 55th (Westmorland) Regiments of Foot, the Border Regiment served with distinction in both World Wars. The badge’s design celebrates its Napoleonic battle honour at Arroyo dos Molinos and the Egyptian campaigns. The King’s Crown identifies this as the pre-1953 issue, replaced later by the St Edward’s Crown when merged into the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment in 1959.
