Crimson Shield of the North

Under Review

Description: This rare imperforate cinderella stamp belongs to the same historical series issued for the unrecognized Mirdita Republic (Republic of Mirdita), a brief breakaway state in the mountainous regions of northern Albania. The central vignette features a handstruck illustration of the classic Albanian double-headed heraldic eagle, rendered entirely in a vivid crimson-red ink against a coarse, light-tan cream paper backing. A rigid typographic box grid tightly frames the central emblem, with the top bar reading "VETËKEVERRIA" (Self-Government) and the right border displaying "E MIRDITIËS" (of Mirdita). The left side contains the vertical inscription "POSTA" (Post), while the bottom compartment states the regional currency unit "QINTAR". The numerical denomination 10 is explicitly housed inside small square panels positioned in all four outer corners of the layout. This specific specimen features two distinct overprints: a prominent, heavy black typographic "TAKSE" (Postage Due) overprint stamped across the eagle's breast, and a vertical black bars cancellation completely blocking out the left "POSTA" text box.

Circa: 1921

Condition: Unused - hinged

Notes:

The Republic of Mirdita was a short-lived, unrecognized state declared by Marka Gjoni in July 1921, backed by Yugoslav interests seeking to weaken the newly formed Albanian central government. The rebellion collapsed completely by November when Albanian government troops re-established control over the region. Specialist reference books, such as Kohl's Handbuch, firmly classify these definitive and "TAKSE" (Postage Due/Tax) overprinted sets as highly speculative "fantasy issues" or Cinderella stamps rather than genuine, legally authorized post office releases.
