Description: This beautifully designed horizontal stamp from French Somaliland carries a face value of 40 centimes, indicated by the "0F40" printed in the upper left corner. The central illustration portrays an elegant, spotted cheetah (labeled vertically on the left as "GUEPARD") sitting in a watchful, upright posture on the African savannah. Set against a vast backdrop of rolling desert mountains, sparse grasslands, and a solitary acacia tree, the artwork evokes the remote geography of the Horn of Africa. The letters "RF" for République Française sit nestled in the bottom right corner above the bold territory name "CÔTE FRANÇAISE DES SOMALIS" (French Coast of the Somalis). Incredibly fine typographic credits along the lower left margin immortalize the original wildlife artist and the master engraver who carved the printing plates.
Circa: 1950s
Condition: Unused - Hinged
Notes:
The specimen shown in this image is a clean, uncancelled "Mint" version, allowing the pristine details of the landscape engraving to be observed without the interference of heavy postal ink. French Somaliland was renamed the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas less than a decade after this release, before ultimately gaining independence as Djibouti, making stamps inscribed "Côte Française des Somalis" finite historical artifacts.
