Royal Air Force Air Gunner Half-Wing Brevet

Under Review

Material: Cloth embroidery on dark backing.

Size: 83 mm w x 45 mm h.

Description: The historical artifact is an authentic, premium World War II Royal Air Force (RAF) Air Gunner (AG) aircrew qualification half brevet badge. This specific specimen is a highly desirable padded variety, meticulously crafted with a raised, multi-dimensional cotton-wool stuffing underneath the embroidery to give the insignia a distinctively plump, three-dimensional silhouette. The central motif features a wreath of rich brown laurel branches hand-stitched in a dense chain pattern, encircling the off-white silk-embroidered trade letters "AG". Sweeping upwards and outwards to the right is a single, beautifully sculpted half wing featuring tiered layers of cream-colored silk threading that simulate individual flight feathers. The reverse of this premium variation is fully enclosed and reinforced with a coarse, unbleached tan canvas backing, which completely conceals the underlying thread knots and protected the delicate structural embroidery from warping when stitched onto a heavy wool service dress tunic or battle dress jacket.

Circa: 1939-1945.

Notes:

This brevet identified a qualified Royal Air Force Air Gunner and would have been worn above the left breast pocket on service dress or battledress. Air Gunners formed part of the specialist aircrew structure of the Second World War, operating defensive armament in bomber and other aircraft crews.
