Palestine 10 Mils Rachel’s Tomb Stamp

Under Review

Description: This artifact is a beautifully preserved example of the 10 mils grey definitive postage stamp featuring a detailed vignette of Rachel's Tomb. The design features the sacred domed structure and its enclosing stone walls, framed by an ancient olive tree silhouette on the right side. The top border explicitly states the face value "10" on the left and its Arabic numeric equivalent "١٠" on the right, sandwiching the name "PALESTINE" in bold Roman lettering. Mirroring this at the bottom, the name is printed in Hebrew on the left ("פלשתינה (א״י)") and Arabic script on the right ("فلسطين"), meeting the mandated multilingual administration requirements of the territory. A heavy, dark-inked circular postmark covers the center of the face, clearly displaying a "5 PM" time operational strike from its point of mailing.

Circa: 1927-1945

Condition: Used

Notes:

The League of Nations Mandate strictly required that all official currency, documents, and postage stamps display English, Arabic, and Hebrew languages equally. The Hebrew inscription specifically includes the letters "א״י" in parentheses, which stands for Eretz Yisrael (Land of Israel), a controversial addition that was required to satisfy the Jewish population while keeping the word "Palestine" as the official geographical title.
