Under Review

Description: This multi-colored postage stamp issued by Poczta Polska commemorates the legacy of the Polish-Jewish educator, pediatrician, and children's rights advocate Janusz Korczak. The central illustration presents a stylised vignette from his classic 1923 allegorical novel, King Matt the First (Król Maciuś Pierwszy). It depicts the young protagonist, King Matt, looking small yet dignified in his royal blue cloak while standing beside a giant guard in a light blue military uniform holding a heavy sword hilt. The lower section features a detailed textual inscription detailing the name of the book alongside the author's real name and life dates, reading "KRÓL MACIUŚ PIERWSZY • JANUSZ KORCZAK 22 • 7 • 1879 – 5 • 8 • 1942". Along the left edge, the country name "POLSKA" is aligned vertically next to a bold face value denomination of 1 Złoty.

Circa: 1962-1963

Condition: Used - Hinged

Notes:

The artwork on this series is highly celebrated for its expressive, childlike illustrative style designed to mirror the whimsical yet bittersweet nature of Korczak's literature. The text elements at the bottom note August 5, 1942, marking the tragic historical day when Janusz Korczak and the children of his Warsaw Ghetto orphanage were transported to the Treblinka extermination camp.
