New Zealand Māori Rock Drawing Pair

Under Review

Description: This striking stamp pair belongs to the iconic pictorial definitive series issued by New Zealand. The central graphic design replicates a historic, charcoal-and-ochre cave painting depicting the "Opihi Taniwha," a mythical, lizard-like protector spirit traditionally recognized in indigenous Māori lore. Discovered within ancient limestone rock shelters in South Canterbury, the prehistoric motif was carefully adapted for philatelic reproduction by graphic artists to honor the nation's rich cultural heritage. Initially introduced in July 1960 as a pre-decimal "2/-" (two shilling) issue, the design was later updated to this decimal "20c" denomination to facilitate the country's historic transition into decimal currency.
