Gallipoli Golden Jubilee

VerifiedShowcased

Description: The stamp is a 4-penny (4d) commemorative issue released by New Zealand to honor the 50th anniversary of the historic landings during the First World War. Printed entirely in a warm, sepia-toned yellow-brown ink, the finely engraved design illustrates the steep, unforgiving cliffs and beachline of Anzac Cove on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Prominently displayed across the upper margin is the word "ANZAC", accompanied by the anniversary date range of "1915" and "1965". The country designation "NEW ZEALAND" stretches cleanly across the bottom frame, sitting adjacent to the large "4D" face value denomination. A bold, black partial ink postmark reading "...ST EARLY" cuts directly through the center of the landscape vignette, indicating its historic postal cancellation.

Circa: 1965

Condition: Used - Hinged

Notes: ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. Australian and New Zealand troops landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915; the anniversary became Anzac Day, an annual occasion of remembrance.

Issued on 14 April 1965, the stamp was designed by R. M. Conly and printed by Harrison and Sons, England, using photogravure. It formed part of a two-stamp commemorative issue, alongside a fivepenny value incorporating a red poppy.
