Material: Gilding metal (single-piece construction)
Size: 40 mm W × 42 mm H
Description: This die-struck brass regimental cap badge centers on a highly detailed, forward-facing head of a red deer stag with a full set of multi-pointed antlers. Nestled directly within the curve of the antlers are the large Roman numerals "IX," representing the 9th regiment. The entire central motif is flanked by a dense, sweeping wreath of New Zealand fern leaves that curve upward to meet at the top. Surmounting the entire design is a classic, stylized British Imperial King’s Crown, symbolizing enduring loyalty to the reigning monarch. The base of the badge is anchored by a curved, three-part scroll containing the embossed Māori motto "KIA TOA" in bold capital lettering.
Reverse: Unmarked brass slider.
Circa: 1911 – 1952
Notes:
This insignia was worn by the 1st Battalion of the 9th (Wellington East Coast Rifles) Regiment, a territorial military unit formed in 1911. The unit's lifespan under this exact name was incredibly brief, as it was re-designated as the 9th (Hawke's Bay) Regiment on March 27, 1914, just months before the outbreak of World War I.
The Māori motto "Kia toa" translates directly to "Be brave", while the choice of a red deer stag was chosen by the regiment to symbolize alertness, strength, and a readiness to defend its territory.
