Dawn of the Mediterranean Cross

Description: This artifact is a 2d (two pence) multicolored postage stamp issued by Malta as the foundational anchor of its landmark 1965–1970 Definitive History Series. Released shortly after the island gained full independence from Great Britain, the grand philatelic series was designed to visually document the diverse cultural epochs that shaped the nation’s identity. Titled "Proto Christian," this specific denomination features an intricate illustration of a third-century clay oil lamp. The lamp's central medallion is embossed with an early Chi-Rho (Chrismon) monogram, one of the earliest known cryptograms utilized by underground Christian communities in the Roman Empire. Set against a rich, deep blue backdrop, the design is completed by a classical Roman temple facade in the bottom left corner and a stylized, floating flame, creating a powerful narrative of faith emerging from the shadow of antiquity.
