Malta King George VI Self-Government Overprint

Under Review

Description: This 2-penny postage and revenue stamp was issued by the crown colony of Malta as an essential part of the historic 1948 Self-Government Overprint series. The baseline stamp was originally prepared in the late 1930s to early 1940s, showcasing a view titled "Victoria and the Citadel, Gozo" along the lower left margin, balanced by the profile of King George VI facing left under an imperial naval crown. Following the promulgation of the landmark 1947 MacMichael Constitution, which granted Malta domestic political independence, authorities overprinted existing definitive stocks with a prominent two-line commercial stamp reading "SELF-GOVERNMENT / 1947". The entire layout was expertly printed via a crisp line-engraving process by the renowned security firm Waterlow & Sons Limited.
