Description: This historic 1896 postage stamp from the Principality of Montenegro features a light green lithographed central vignette depicting the iconic Cetinje Monastery nestled against a mountainous Balkan backdrop. The vignette is enclosed by a prominent reddish-brown frame featuring the Cyrillic text "ЦРНА ГОРА" (Montenegro) at the top, flanked by the historical bicentennial years 1696 and 1896. The bottom panel displays the denomination "3 Новч." (3 Novčića), while the two lower corners are adorned with the crowned double-headed heraldic eagle of the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty. This specimen features clean 10½ line perforations along the edges and showcases clear printing with crisp margins, remaining entirely free from heavy ink cancellations. It holds immense significance as part of the historic architectural and commemorative series produced under Prince Nicholas I to bolster national identity.
Circa: 1896
Condition: MH
Notes:
This specific historical series was heavily targeted by the infamous master counterfeiter François Fournier, who produced convincing lithographic forgeries in the early twentieth century. Genuine stamps are distinguished by thin, precise frame lines and subtle shading lines on the monastery tower, whereas counterfeits look muddy.
The Cetinje Monastery serves as the primary seat of the Serbian Orthodox Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral. Originally established in 1484 by Prince Ivan Crnojević of Zeta, the structure functioned as the definitive administrative, cultural, and spiritual hub of the region. Following its complete destruction by Ottoman forces in 1692 during the Morean War, the monastery was completely rebuilt between 1701 and 1704 by Metropolitan Danilo Petrović-Njegoš, the renowned founder of the historic Petrović-Njegoš dynasty. Danilo constructed the new complex directly upon the foundations of the old Crnojević castle, intentionally integrating salvaged decorative stone slabs, consoles, and the family coat of arms to preserve a physical link to medieval Montenegrin heritage.
