Mediterranean Maritime Transport

Under Review

Description: This monochrome blue postage due stamp issued by the Principality of Monaco features an intricately engraved architectural and nautical scene. The primary vignette depicts a traditional two-sailed Mediterranean boat traveling along the coastline, labeled in the bottom-right corner as "FELOUQUE XVIIIᵉ S" (18th Century Felucca). In the background, the fortified stone walls and buildings of Monaco-Ville rise sharply from the rocky ocean cliffs. The country name "MONACO" is anchored cleanly in the upper-left corner, balanced by the specialized operational designation "TIMBRE-TAXE" in the lower-left to signify its use for underpaid mail collection. The unusual face value of 001 (representing 0.01 New Francs or 1 Centime) sits positioned in the upper-right corner box, while the baseline margin credits the design to the artist Gabriel Spitz and the master engraver Jean Cocteau.
