Treasure detail

Ceylon King George VI Temple of the Tooth

Under Review

Description: This horizontal pictorial definitive stamp from the British Crown Colony of Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) depicts the sacred Sri Dalada Maligawa, commonly known as the Temple of the Tooth, situated in the royal capital of Kandy. The vignette captures the distinctive octagonal Paththirippuwa tower and primary gateway in a deep slate-blue intaglio print. A portrait of King George VI in a military high-collar uniform is enclosed within a right-hand circular frame. Bordered in a rich chocolate brown, the piece is anchored by bold "25c" denomination panels resting upon stylized wave accents.

Circa: 1938

Condition: MH

Notes:

The Temple of the Tooth was both a sacred Buddhist site and a symbol of political authority in Kandy. Its inclusion in this pictorial series reflects how colonial stamp design used prominent local landmarks to represent place, history, and imperial administration together.
