Mountain Goat-Antelope Sentinel

Under Review

Description: The stamp utilizes a vertical rectangular design featuring a monochromatic light brown engraving of a Japanese serow standing on a snowy mountain crest. The animal is rendered from a three-quarter perspective, displaying its stout body, short backward-curving horns, and dense fur coat designed for sub-zero alpine conditions. Inscribed clearly across the upper-left horizontal border is the traditional kanji text for the national post, "日本郵便" (Nippon Yubin). Directly beneath this inscription, the large face value numeral "8" dominates the upper-left quadrant. A heavy black ink cancellation line cuts horizontally across the upper-right corner of the design, indicating its successful traversal through the nation's domestic mailing network.

Circa: Mid 20th Century

Condition: Used - Hinged

Notes:

This 8 Yen stamp was released as a critical piece of Japan's classic "Fauna, Flora and National Treasures" definitive series, which marked a major post-WWII philatelic movement to celebrate the archipelago's rich natural history. The animal depicted is the Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus), known locally as kamoshika, a highly specialized goat-antelope endemic to the dense, high-altitude montane forests of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Around the exact period this stamp was issued, the species was facing severe population depletion due to overhunting, leading the Japanese government to officially elevate its protection status to a "Special National Monument" in 1955.
