Treasure detail

Japan's Stately Onagadori Rooster

Under Review

Description: This stamp is a 500-yen (500) high-value definitive issue from the Post-War Empire of Japan (日本郵便). The design features an exquisite illustration of an Onagadori, the celebrated Japanese breed of long-tailed fowl, perched majestically upon a wooden stand with its cascade of tail feathers draping downward. Rendered in a deep forest-green background with a cream-toned right-hand column, the layout presents the traditional vertical country inscription "日本郵便" (Nippon Yūbin). The large denomination digits and currency symbol "500" are boldly set across the lower center. A dark, partial circular postmark splits the lower right margin, certifying its historical operational use.

Circa: 1950s-1960s

Condition: Used - Hinged

Notes:

The Onagadori fowl captured on this plate is a uniquely prized breed originating from the Kōchi Prefecture, designated by the Japanese government as a special Natural Monument because its tail feathers never moult and can grow to over ten meters in length.
