Treasure detail

Japan Men of the East Wall, Takamatsuzuka Tumulus

Under Review

Description: Japanese semi-postal stamp reproducing the “Men of the East Wall” mural from the Takamatsuzuka Tumulus in Asuka, Nara Prefecture. Two courtly male figures appear against the weathered plaster ground of the original painting, giving the stamp both archaeological and artistic interest.

Circa: 1970s

Condition: MNH

Notes: The 20+5 yen denomination included a surcharge for the Cultural Property Preservation Fund. Issued soon after the tomb’s excavation attracted national attention, the stamp reflects Japan’s effort to present and preserve early historical art through the postal medium.
