Treasure detail

Japan 1½ Sen Purple

Under Review

Description: This classical Asian philatelic specimen belongs to the iconic and highly collected Chrysanthemum definitive series released by the Ministry of Communications for the Empire of Japan. The graphic layout centers entirely on the Kikumon—the sixteen-petal Imperial Crest of Japan—which serves as the traditional symbol of the Japanese Emperor and the Imperial Family. Arching across the top section inside a decorative ring are the Kanji characters "大日本帝国郵便" (Dai Nippon Teikoku Yūbin), designating the piece as official Imperial Japanese Post. The lower corners elegantly frame the fraction currency denomination of 1½ S (1½ Sen), while a heavy, dark black circular town cancellation ink chop covers the central design elements.

Circa: 1899–1908
