Treasure detail

Italy's Allegory of Democracy

Under Review

Description: This stamp is a 50-lire definitive issue from the Republic of Italy (Poste Italiane). The detailed vertical design presents a classical allegorical representation of "Italia" personified as a stately woman standing atop a weather-beaten, ancient tree trunk. She wears a spiked crown, holds a traditional staff or spear in her right hand, and looks directly forward. Emerging vigorously from both sides of the old stump are fresh, leafy branches of an olive tree, symbolizing peace and national renewal. The country inscription "POSTE ITALIANE" runs along a thin banner at the top, while the bottom frame cleanly spans the denomination text "LIRE 50 LIRE". A heavy, circular black ink postal cancel is stamped across the central figure, leaving behind a partial date and location mark.
