India's Sovereignty and Lion Capital

Under Review

Description: This vintage 1A (one anna) official service postage stamp was issued by the Republic of India for government use following its independence from the British Empire. The vertical monochrome design is printed in a deep greenish-blue ink against a warm cream paper stock, framing the Lion Capital of Ashoka as the national emblem of the newly formed sovereign state. The monument is depicted with its three visible lions standing back-to-back on an elaborate abacus base which features the central Ashoka Chakra wheel. The bold text "SERVICE" curves inside an ornate rectangular frame panel at the top, directly above the word "POSTAGE". The country name "INDIA" anchors the lower margin, bordered by the dual denomination markings showing "1A" on the left and the matching numeric character symbol in Devanagari script on the right.
